BAGUIO CITY, Feb. 14(PIA) – Make Tech-Voc (Technical-Vocational) course a top choice for a better quality of life.
This was stressed Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Regional Director Cenon Querubin in a radio interview adding that maybe it’s time for the students to change their views about tech voc as an option for their future.
It’s high time we equate blue collar with white collar jobs. May be what we should think now is how fast we can get a job and help our family,” Querubin said.
Over Bombo Radyo’s regular weekly program dubbed “Unlad Pinoy, Angat ka sa Iba”, Querubin discussed TESDA’s massive training programs.
According to Querubin, there are four training components which the public can avail of like the school based program, Kasanayan sa Hanapbuhay (KASH), Community based training program and the TESDA Technology Institute.
The school based program refers to the direct delivery or provisions of Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) programs by the TESDA administered schools.
Another component is the Kasanayan sa Hanapbuhay program (KASH) which is a training and employment program involving a contract between an apprentice and an employer on an approved apprenticeable occupation. It aims to provide a mechanism that will ensure availability of qualified skilled workers based on industry requirements, Querubin said.
Under the KASH, partners include the Texas Instruments (TI), MOOG Controls, Philippines, and other small industry players like food chains, sewing and others. This is formerly called the apprenticeship program, wherein students are given a salary of 75% of minimum wage, Querubin added.
For the TESDA Technology institute, there is the Baguio City School of Arts and Trades (BCSAT) which offers courses on hotel and restaurant management like bartending, commercial cooking, pastries and other.
We have our Regional Training Center (RTC) which offers machining, automatic, wielding, carpentry, electrical and other industrial trades. There are also training centers located in Abra, Kalinga, Ifugao and Mt. Province, Querubin said.
For Community-based Training for Enterprise development Program, TESDA partners with government agencies, local government units, non-government organizations, and people organizations with the mission to help the poor get into productive undertakings to help themselves and their communities.
This program is primarily addressed to the poor and marginal groups, those who cannot access, or are not accessible by formal training provisions. It is purposively designed to catalyze the creation of livelihood enterprises that shall be implemented by the trainees, immediately after the training.
According to Querubin, basically all the programs of TESDA in 2010 were free with President Benigno Aquino III pursuing the scholarship program started by the previous administration.*(PIA CAR)
